The Boyds: A Camping Family
Spencer & Dot

IMAGE CAPTION - The Boyd Family
At age six Spencer Boyd went to camp. There was a polio epidemic in Atlanta so his four week session stretched into nine weeks of riding, hiking, swimming, and camping his way through the NC Mountains. When he finally returned home to begin the school year Spencer stepped out of the car, looked his father in the eye, and said that when he grew up he would be a camp director. In 1954, between his Junior and Senior years at the University of Georgia, he made good his promise, and started his first camp with only 20 campers. In 1962, shortly after his return from the Air Force, Spencer met and married Dorothy Coe. Parents of six sons themselves, Spencer and Dot have spent a lifetime together providing summers of fun and growth for camp age youngsters.
Our family’s camping tradition is now continued with Adam and Ann and Bobby and Barbara Boyd each taking over responsibilities as Directors. With our third generation now enjoying their camper years we would invite your family to join ours by sharing a summer of fun and growth with us high up in the Mountains of North Carolina.
Adam & Ann, Merri-Mac Directors

Like Spencer and Dot, Adam also met his wife, Ann, while on summer staff at Merri-Mac. After graduating from Wofford College, and later earning a M.Div. from Reformed Theological Seminary Adam returned to camp where he served for eight years as the Timberlake Director. In the fall of 2001 Adam began directing Merri-Mac also. Ann, a Converse College graduate and mother of three, shares Adam's role as Camp Director. Together they are committed to sharing the traditions of Merri-Mac through summers of fun and growth with camp age children.
Bobby & Barbara

Like all of the Boyd sons, Bobby grew up in the camping business, probably being able to rig a camp tarp before he could turn the knob on a television set. Bobby, who went to West Georgia College, oversees the maintenance department for both camps and travels to camp promotional visits during the winter. His wife, Barbara, is a graduate of Mars Hill College.
Dan Singletary, Timberlake Director

IMAGE CAPTION - Camp Merri-Mac is fortunate to have such wonderful folks as Dan and Annie Singletary - they're a barrel of fun and the campers love them too!
Dan Singletary joined our staff in the summer of 2000. It was at that time that he fell in love with both the camp and his now wife, Annie, who has been a part of camp since she was 7 years old as a camper, CIT, counselor, CIT director and now Riding Director. Dan grew up in Jackson, Mississippi and is a graduate of Ole Miss. He is an avid fly-fisherman, kayaker, and outdoorsman who loves the mountains of western North Carolina! Annie has been a part of camp since she was 7 years old as a camper, CIT, counselor, CIT director, Riding Director, and now Assistant Program Director. In the off-season Annie works as a professional potter in Asheville's growing River District arts community.
